After-Hours Answering Service: AI vs Human, Real Prices

By Adam Sandler · 2026-10-17

Short answer: an after-hours answering service costs about $349 to $720 a month for live humans at 60 calls, based on PATLive's and Ruby's pricing pages checked October 17, 2026. AI services handle the same 60 calls for $49 to $199 on their entry plans. None of the services we checked charges extra for nights or weekends, so you pay for volume, not for the hour.

An after-hours answering service picks up when you're closed: evenings, weekends and holidays. It can be a team of live receptionists or an AI voice agent. Either way you forward your business number to it after hours, it talks to the caller, and you get a message, a booked appointment or, for real emergencies, a transfer to your phone.

Who actually needs after-hours coverage

If almost nobody calls you after hours, voicemail with a clear callback promise may be enough. Check your phone provider's call log for calls outside your business hours before you buy anything.

These are human receptionist services that answer around the clock. We read each pricing page on October 17, 2026.

Smith.ai also charges per-call add-ons, such as $1.50 to book an appointment and $0.50 for an SMS or Slack alert, so a busy night with bookings costs more than the base price.

AI after-hours answering: real prices

An AI voice agent doesn't work shifts, so it answers at 2 am the same way it answers at 2 pm. None of the 16 AI plans in our database charges by time of day. They bill by minute, call, conversation, unique caller, phone seat or flat fee. Here are the cheapest entry plans, from each vendor's pricing page captured October 15, 2026:

Cost at 30, 60 and 100 after-hours calls

Same workload for everyone: calls of 3 minutes each, each from a different caller. For AI services we used the entry plan plus its published overage, the same math as our cost calculator. For live services we used the cheapest published plan that covers the minutes or calls, including that plan's overage.

Smith.ai live receptionistsHuman$300$645$915

At 60 after-hours calls, about two a night, the AI plans above cost $49 to $199 and the live services cost $349 to $720. Ruby jumps to $1,725 at 100 calls because it lists no overage rate, so 300 minutes needs its 500-minute plan. Human prices assume exactly 3 billed minutes per call; services that round each call up can bill more. Smith.ai live prices are before add-ons.

AI or human for after-hours calls?

Pick AI when most night calls are routine: "are you open tomorrow," "can I book," "how much for a service call." AI is also the better fit when you mainly want every caller to reach something better than voicemail and leave a clear message.

Pick a human service when night calls are emotional or high stakes, like a tenant with water pouring through the ceiling, a medical question, or a legal intake where a bad first impression costs you the client. A person can calm someone down and judge urgency in ways a script can't.

Mixing both is common: AI answers everything, and true emergencies get transferred to your on-call phone. For a deeper side-by-side, read AI receptionist vs human answering service.

Emergency routing checklist

Before you forward a single after-hours call, set these up:

  1. Write down what counts as an emergency. For a plumber that might be an active leak or no water; for a property manager, a lockout or no heat. Everything else becomes a message for the morning.
  2. Name the on-call person and a backup number. If the first phone isn't picked up, the call or alert should go to a second person.
  3. Confirm the plan can transfer live calls, not just take messages. Ask the vendor directly, and ask whether transfers cost extra.
  4. Choose how you get alerted. A text with the caller's name, number and problem is faster to act on than an email.
  5. Set your hours and time zone in the service, so it only takes over when you're actually closed.
  6. Test it at night. Call your own number after hours, pretend to be an emergency, and time how long it takes to reach your phone.

How to choose in 15 minutes

  1. Count last month's calls that came in outside business hours, using your phone provider's call log.
  2. Put that count and a 3-minute average into the AI answering cost calculator.
  3. Compare the top two AI results with the cheapest human plan for the same volume in the table above.
  4. Start a free trial and forward only after-hours calls at first, using your phone provider's time-based call forwarding.

FAQ

How much does an after-hours answering service cost?

At about 60 after-hours calls a month of 3 minutes each, live human services cost $349 (PATLive) to $720 (Ruby) on their pricing pages checked October 17, 2026. AI services cost $49 to $199 on their entry plans for the same calls, based on prices captured October 15, 2026.

Do answering services charge more at night or on weekends?

Not the ones we checked. PATLive says it has no night or weekend fees, Smith.ai says calls at 2 pm and 2 am cost the same, and Ruby and Posh include 24/7 coverage in every plan, all per their pricing pages on October 17, 2026. The AI plans we track bill by usage, not by time of day.

Is an AI after-hours answering service worth it?

For routine night calls like hours, booking and messages, usually yes. OnCrew covers 100 calls for $49 a month, while the cheapest live plan we priced for 100 calls of 3 minutes is PATLive at $479.

How much does a 24 hour answering service cost?

Live 24/7 services start at $49 a month plus $2.99 a minute (PATLive), $65 a month plus $2.30 a minute (Posh) or $250 for 50 minutes (Ruby), per their pricing pages on October 17, 2026. AI services answer around the clock from $24.95 a month (Upfirst, 30 calls).

Can an AI answering service handle after-hours emergencies?

It can take the details and pass the call or a text to whoever is on call, if the plan supports transfers or alerts. It shouldn't decide what counts as an emergency on its own, so you write those rules before you turn it on.
