AI Phone Answering Service: Cost and How Billing Works
By Adam Sandler · 2026-10-16
Short answer: an AI phone answering service costs $24.95 to $199 a month on the entry plan, based on the pricing pages of 16 services we checked on October 15, 2026. What you actually pay depends on how the service counts usage. At 100 calls a month, the same workload costs anywhere from $49 to $212.50.
An AI phone answering service is software that picks up your business calls with an AI voice. It answers questions, takes messages, books appointments and texts or emails you a summary. You keep your number and forward calls to it, either all the time or only when you don't pick up. Some vendors call the same product an "AI receptionist." The price tag is simple to read. The billing unit behind it is where the real cost hides.

How each billing unit works
- Per minute: you pay for talk time. A 2-minute call uses 2 minutes of your plan. Six services bill this way, and it's cheapest when calls are short.
- Per call: every answered call counts as one, whether it lasts 20 seconds or 10 minutes. Good when calls run long.
- Per conversation or interaction: works like per call, but each vendor defines what counts as one, so read the fine print on Ringly.io, AptaBook and Nextiva XBert.
- Per unique caller: Goodcall counts each distinct phone number once a month, so a customer who calls you five times counts once.
- Flat fee: NextPhone charges $199 for unlimited calls.
- Phone seat: Allô and Quo Sona sit on top of a paid business phone line, so the total depends on that seat price too.
What it costs at 30, 60, 100 and 200 calls
We priced four monthly volumes using 3-minute calls, each from a different caller, on each entry plan plus its published overage. This is the same math our cost calculator uses.
| Service | 30 calls | 60 calls | 100 calls | 200 calls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upfirst | $24.95 | $69.95 | $129.95 | $279.95 |
| Dialzara | $43.40 | $86.60 | $144.20 | $288.20 |
| Marlie | $49 | $49 | $66.50 | $171.50 |
| Trillet | $49 | $55 | $79 | $139 |
| OnCrew | $49 | $49 | $49 | $148 |
| Phonely | $50 | $50 | $75 | $150 |
| Rosie | $49 | $49 | Not computable | Not computable |
| AptaBook | $49 | Not computable | Not computable | Not computable |
| Goodcall | $79 | $79 | $79 | Not computable |
| My AI Front Desk | $99 | $99 | $124 | $199 |
| Nextiva XBert | $99 | $99 | $99 | $198 |
| Ringly.io | $99 | $118.90 | $198.50 | $397.50 |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | $150 | $150 | $212.50 | $462.50 |
| NextPhone | $199 | $199 | $199 | $199 |
"Not computable" means the volume goes past the entry plan and the vendor publishes no overage rate, so you would have to move to a bigger plan. Allô and Quo Sona need a paid phone seat, so we left them out instead of guessing. Some services, like Upfirst and Dialzara, may be cheaper on a higher tier than on the entry plan plus overage; check their pricing pages before you decide.
Break-even math: when to switch plans
Two comparisons do most of the work.
Per minute vs per call. At 100 calls a month, Marlie costs $49 if calls average 1 or 2 minutes, because 200 minutes fits inside its 250. At 3 minutes it's $66.50, and at 5 minutes it's $136.50. OnCrew costs $49 for those same 100 calls no matter how long they run. If your calls are long, per-call billing usually wins. If they're quick questions about hours or directions, per-minute plans are hard to beat.
Metered vs flat. NextPhone is $199 flat. At 200 calls of 3 minutes, My AI Front Desk reaches $199 and Nextiva XBert reaches $198, so that's roughly where a flat plan stops costing extra. Ringly.io passes $199 just after 100 conversations. Below about 200 calls a month, most metered plans in our data cost less than the flat fee.
Overage traps to check before you sign up
- No published overage. Rosie, AptaBook and Goodcall don't list a per-unit overage on their entry plans. Ask what happens at the limit: an upgrade, a pause or a surprise bill.
- Small included amounts. Upfirst includes 30 calls and Dialzara includes 60 minutes. Both are cheap to start but climb fast: 100 calls costs $129.95 and $144.20 on those entry plans.
- Expensive per-unit rates. Smith.ai AI Receptionist charges $2.50 per call past 75, and Ringly.io charges $1.99 per conversation past 50.
- Spam and short calls. On per-call or per-conversation plans, robocalls and hang-ups may count. Ask the vendor whether they filter them.
- Hidden seat costs. If the plan needs a phone seat, add that line's monthly price to the total.
How to pick one
- Pull last month's inbound call count from your phone provider's call log.
- Estimate the average call length. If you're not sure, use 3 minutes.
- Put both numbers into the AI answering cost calculator to see every service's monthly total.
- Start a trial on the two cheapest fits, and at first forward only the calls you miss, using your phone provider's no-answer forwarding, so you can hear how it handles real callers.

FAQ
How much does an AI phone answering service cost?
Entry plans for the 16 services we track run from $24.95 a month (Upfirst) to $199 a month (NextPhone), based on each vendor's pricing page captured October 15, 2026. For 100 calls of about 3 minutes, the plans we could price cost $49 to $212.50.
How much does an AI answering service cost per month for a small business?
At 30 calls a month, most entry plans cost $24.95 to $99. At 200 calls of 3 minutes, the computable entry plans range from $139 (Trillet) to $462.50 (Smith.ai AI Receptionist), so your call volume matters more than the sticker price.
How does an AI answering service work?
You forward your business number to the service, and its AI voice agent answers, talks to the caller, takes a message or books an appointment, and sends you a summary. Billing is counted in minutes, calls, conversations, unique callers or a flat monthly fee, depending on the vendor.
Is per-minute or per-call billing cheaper?
It depends on call length. At 100 calls a month, Marlie (per minute) costs $49 if calls average 1 or 2 minutes but $136.50 at 5 minutes, while OnCrew (per call) stays at $49 regardless of length.
What happens if I go over my AI answering plan?
Some services charge a published overage, like $0.25 per minute at Phonely or $1.50 per call at Upfirst. Others, like Rosie, AptaBook and Goodcall, list no overage rate, so going over means moving to a bigger plan.
